The backpacks are packed. The school drop-off line is back in business. Everyone has somewhere to be at approximately 7:42 every morning.
And suddenly…
the house is quiet.
Friends, we made it.
Summer was wonderful, but let’s be honest: by the time school starts again, most parents are ready to reclaim a few things. The kitchen. The couch. Maybe even the bathroom for more than 45 consecutive seconds.
And yes, the pool…the beautiful beautiful pool is calling to you…
Because now that the kids are back at school, it’s time to remember that the pool isn’t just a place for cannonballs and wet towels.
It’s yours, too.
Your New Favorite Afternoon Activity: Nothing
There’s something pretty wonderful about coming home after a busy day, changing into something comfortable and heading straight for the backyard.
No elaborate plans. No reservations. No driving across town.
Just you, the water and a little time to decompress.
Splash around. Float around. Stretch your legs. Sit on the steps, nap on a giant flamingo floatie…
You don’t have to do anything.
And honestly, that’s kind of the point.
Even 20 or 30 minutes in the pool can feel like a reset button. A little quiet time, a little sunshine and absolutely nobody asking, “What’s for dinner?”
Okay, eventually someone will ask. But let’s enjoy the moment.
Your Pool Can Double as Your Gym
Now that the summer schedule has settled down, it’s also a great time to get back into a regular exercise routine.
Swimming is a full-body workout that’s easy on the joints, and water exercise provides resistance without requiring a complicated collection of gym equipment.
Best of all, your gym is right there…just a few steps from the back door.
No traffic. No parking. No pretending you know how to use that intimidating machine in the corner.
You can keep it simple: swim a few laps, walk through the water, do some gentle exercises or spend a few minutes moving around.
Ten minutes is better than zero.
And if you happen to spend another 20 minutes floating afterward, hey ‘me time’ is self care and that is vital!
There’s Also Something Called “Quiet Couple Time”
Remember when you and your partner could actually connect without interruption?
Neither do we.
But the school year brings these little opportunities to rediscover it.
Once in a while, the pool can become your own little backyard escape. Grab a drink, put your feet in the water and catch up while the house is quiet.
Take a swim after dinner. Sit beside the pool at sunset. Or simply enjoy ten uninterrupted minutes together without discussing homework, carpool schedules or whose turn it is to feed the dog.
It doesn’t have to be a date night to count.
Sometimes “Hey, want to sit by the pool for a while?” is plenty.
Weekends Can Still Be Pool Days
Of course, just because school is back doesn’t mean pool season is over, especially not in NorCal where the Summer is as long as the coastline.
In fact, weekends might be even better.
Invite a couple of friends over. Fire up the grill. Put some music on. Let everyone relax while the pool does what it does best: provide an instant gathering place without requiring you to plan an entire event.
And unlike summer vacation, nobody needs to pack a suitcase.
That’s a win.
Keep the Pool Ready for You
The easiest way to enjoy your pool during the school year is to keep up with the little things.
Regular water testing, good circulation, a solar cover to keep it warm as fall slowlsy creeps in, add a cleaning routine and equipment checks to keep small problems from becoming weekend-consuming projects.
Because when you finally have a free Saturday afternoon, the last thing you want to hear is:
“Uh-oh. What’s that growing in the pool?”
A little regular maintenance keeps the water ready for swimming instead of giving you another item for the weekend to-do list.
And if you’re not sure what your pool needs, we can help you get things back on track before a small issue becomes a much bigger one.
So Go Ahead. Reclaim the Pool.
Summer may get all the glory, but there’s something pretty fantastic about having a pool once the back-to-school routine kicks in.
The water is still warm.
The backyard is still there.
And for at least part of the day, nobody is yelling your name from another room.
Take advantage of it.
Swim a few laps. Grab the float. Enjoy your morning coffee poolside. Invite a friend over. Spend a little quiet time with your partner.
Or sit there doing absolutely nothing.
You’ve been keeping everyone else busy all summer.
Now it’s your turn to enjoy the pool.
After all, you didn’t spend all that time keeping it clean just so someone else could do cannonballs in it.
