Originally settled on the site of a mining camp during California’s Gold Rush in the 1800s, Shingle Springs hosted a wealth of travellers, including the Boston-Newtown Joint Stock Association, whose detailed written records of the Gold Rush eventually helped earn the community its California Historical Landmark designation. Today, Shingle Springs shares its history with nearly 4,500 residents. The town’s Gold Rush roots can still be glimpsed in some of the original architecture that is still standing today, including the Shingle Springs House built in 1850 and the Phelps Store built in the 1880s.
